Kensington & Chelsea Lib Dems join Nick Clegg on the Wave

On Saturday 5th December, Robin Meltzer, the Liberal Democrat campaigner for the new constituency of Kensington, led a team of local members and supporters to meet Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg at the Copenhagen Wave. The Wave was a day of action in London including a march on Parliament to publicise the importance of the Copenhagen summit on climate chaos.

Robin Meltzer said: "Labour have failed on emissions, leaving us near the bottom of the European league table of worst polluters. The Conservatives are just a laughing stock on the environment. It's the Liberal Democrats who are the leaders on climate change."

The Lib Dems are committed to making Britain carbon neutral by 2050. We will reduce emissions faster and more effectively than any other party. The party also has policies to ensure that every home is properly insulated within 10 years of taking power.

There is only a small window of opportunity to stop dangerous climate change. Only the Liberal Democrats will take it.

The UK government must show leadership at home by:

1) Saying yes to an immediate 42% reduction in the UK emissions by 2020 before leaving for the Copenhagen climate talks (the Government is currently committed to 34%).

2) Saying yes to a ten-year programme to offer the opportunity for every home to be a warm home by 2020.

3) Saying yes to 40% of all our electricity from renewable sources by 2020 (the Government is currently committed to 30%).

4) Saying no to the third runway at Heathrow.

5) Saying no to new dirty coal power stations without full CCS.

6) Saying no to the nationalised banks investing public money into Tar Sands.

Europe needs to influence the climate talks by:

1) Committing now to a unilateral EU reduction of 30% by 2020 against a 1990 baseline, ahead of the talks and adopt a target of a 40% reduction against the same time on completion of an international agreement.

2) Committing to supporting a global finance deal worth $160bn per year from developed countries, without double counting emissions through offsets.

3) Introduce further confidence measures to cap-and-trade aviation and shipping; halt deforestation; stop extracting Tar Sands and unconventional fossil fuels.
